Born in Guatemala, Maria focuses on the conservation, restoration, and sustainable use of the Mesoamerican Reef, the second-largest reef system in the world. Spanning the territorial waters of Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico, it is the backbone ecosystem for the Mesoamerican eco-region, critical to the ecological and economic health of the entire Southern Atlantic area.
Maria has helped establish an endowment fund of over $27 million and mobilized over $25 million for regional projects.
