Marseilles, France: Established by Paul Watson in 1977, the Sea Shepherd or Neptunes Navy as they've become more affectionately known, have become the world’s largest private navy.
Proudly flying the jolly roger, a black and white ensign featuring a skull and crossbones, Neptune's Navy' comprises a plucky crew of incredibly brave women and men that patrol the high seven seas, in search of the elusive illegal fishing vessels that to date have operated with impunity.
Operating under the philosophy that 'it takes a pirate to catch a pirate' they fill a crucial gap left by the fact that no government is able or prepared to patrol the waters beyond their economic exclusion zones (EEZ’s) leaving our international waters to become a vast lawless place, where quite literally anything goes.
